When Do You Need an MLOps Engineer?

Use the gap between experimentation and dependable operation to define your MLOps or ML platform hiring requirement.

Identify the operational gap

An MLOps appointment can be useful when model releases depend on manual steps, experiments are difficult to reproduce or nobody clearly owns monitoring and recovery. Start by documenting the friction. If the underlying issue is a poorly defined use case or unsuitable data, adding platform expertise alone will not resolve it.

Separate model work from platform ownership

A machine learning engineer may own training and model-serving components. An MLOps engineer may focus on repeatable releases, traceability and operation. A platform engineer may build shared services for several teams. Decide who owns the model itself, the release process and the production environment. These boundaries matter more than choosing the most fashionable job title.

Ask how releases became repeatable

Invite the specialist to explain a release they supported from experiment to production. Explore how they tracked data and model versions, tested changes, managed dependencies and recovered from a problem. Ask which decisions were theirs and which belonged to another team. Look for an understanding of the trade-off between useful controls and unnecessary process.

Discuss monitoring in context

Ask what the team needed to know after deployment and what action followed an alert. Infrastructure availability, input changes and model performance are different concerns. Explore who investigated issues and how the specialist worked with data scientists, software engineers and service owners. Avoid accepting a dashboard as evidence of effective operational ownership without understanding how it was used.

Define the first responsibilities

Your brief should explain the existing models, deployment environment, team structure and operational pain points. State whether the role will improve one service or create capabilities used by multiple teams. Theseus can then focus on people with relevant delivery experience and the communication skills needed to work across those boundaries.
