Hiring Data Engineers for AI-Ready Foundations
Clarify the pipelines, quality controls and ownership your data engineering appointment needs to support analytics and AI.

Explain who depends on the data
Start with the teams and decisions the data must support. An analyst building a monthly report, a model training pipeline and an application needing fresh information have different requirements. Describe where the data comes from, how often it changes and which problems are already slowing the team down. Avoid describing all of these as a generic data platform project.
Distinguish engineering, architecture and analytics
Data engineers typically build and operate pipelines. Data architects shape how systems and datasets fit together. Analytics engineers may focus on dependable transformation and reusable analytical models. Platform engineers support the shared environment. Titles differ between employers, so define the responsibilities, interfaces and support rather than assuming one title covers every gap.
Probe operational ownership
Ask for an example of a pipeline failure the specialist investigated. What signalled the problem, how did they find the cause and how did they recover missing or incorrect data? Discuss schema changes, backfills, access controls and testing. A useful answer explains the effect on downstream users and how the person reduced the chance of recurrence, not just which tools were used.
Use your constraints to assess relevance
If your team has sensitive information, inconsistent source systems or a small operational function, make that context explicit. Someone who designed a platform with extensive specialist support may need to show how they would work in a smaller team. Conversely, experience with a simple pipeline does not by itself establish readiness for complex shared infrastructure.
Brief the appointment around outcomes
Set out the source systems, data consumers, freshness expectations, quality issues and ownership boundaries. Clarify whether the first task is stabilising existing pipelines or developing a new foundation. Theseus can use those priorities to identify relevant people and distinguish essential experience from a familiar technology checklist.
Find relevant specialist expertise
Theseus is your lifetime Data & AI resourcing partner. We take time to understand your priorities, the people around the role and the experience your next appointment needs.
Explore the relevant roles
For each engagement, clarify the scope, duration, working arrangements, agreed services and client dependencies. Plan access and handover so the knowledge gained stays with your team. Theseus focuses on UK resourcing and considers European and international requirements individually.
