A better brief starts with the objective.

A clear capability brief gives the resourcing requirement a purpose and makes specialist assessment more consistent. It should explain the work, not just list technologies.

Describe the outcome

State the decision, process or product the organisation wants to improve. Explain who benefits, how success will be assessed and what is already known about the problem.

Document the starting point

Describe the available data, existing systems, team skills and programme maturity. Make uncertainty visible. A role tasked with discovering feasibility needs a different brief from one integrating a proven approach.

Separate essentials from preferences

Identify experience that is necessary for the work and skills that can be learned with support. Explain why sector context, a particular platform or a specific modelling discipline is needed rather than treating every preference as mandatory.

Set the boundaries

Clarify decision authority, reporting relationships, resources and dependencies. If the role combines leadership and hands-on work, define the expected balance and the support available.

Use the brief in assessment

Translate each essential requirement into a question or relevant work discussion. Agree how evidence will be evaluated before interviewing. Revise the brief when market feedback exposes an unrealistic combination of responsibilities.

For example, a contract brief for a document-search application could identify the users, available documents, access restrictions and the internal owner who will accept the work. Set out the initial scope, expected engagement period, working arrangements and dependencies. Distinguish the immediate requirement from possible future extensions, so the specialist can assess the opportunity against the work actually available.
