Hiring AI Governance, Risk & Assurance Specialists

Distinguish governance, model risk, assurance and security responsibilities so your next appointment has a clear remit.

Name the decisions the role must support

An AI governance brief should explain the systems in scope, who uses them and which decisions need clearer ownership. Is the gap in documenting use cases, assessing risks, reviewing evidence or coordinating approvals? Broad language about responsible AI can conceal several different roles. Establish the practical work before choosing a title.

Separate complementary disciplines

Governance leads may coordinate policies, ownership and review processes. Model risk specialists may challenge assumptions and limitations. Assurance specialists may assess whether evidence supports claims and whether controls work. AI security specialists address threats and protective measures. A single person may span some of these responsibilities, but the brief should not assume equal depth across all four.

Ask how judgement became action

Invite the specialist to describe a review where evidence was incomplete or stakeholders disagreed. What questions did they ask, who made the decision and how were conditions or follow-up actions recorded? Look for clear communication with technical and business teams. A list of frameworks does not establish the ability to work through a difficult decision.

Use a proportionate interview scenario

Discuss a fictional AI application that helps staff prioritise enquiries. Ask what information is needed to understand its use, limitations and consequences. Explore how the specialist would distinguish issues requiring specialist review from those a team can address directly. This is a hiring discussion, not a determination of legal compliance; regulatory interpretation should involve appropriately qualified advisers.

Give the appointment authority and support

Explain reporting lines, escalation routes and access to engineering, legal, security and business stakeholders. State what the person will own and what they will advise on. Theseus can help align the specialist requirement on the relevant combination of technical understanding, risk judgement and the ability to earn trust across the organisation.
